Concept Albums

Have you ever heard about concept albums? If not, im going to explain what I am referring to. A concept album is a studio album where all musical or lyrical ideas contribute to a story. It is something like an audiobook, but it is not only the voice what tells you what happens, but also the music. I´ll give some examples of the first concept albums and nowadays ones

One of the first concept albums is Woody Guthrie’s Dust BowlBallads (1940). It consists of semi-autobiographical songs about the hardships of American immigrant workers during the 1930s. In the 1970s Pink Floyd released 4 concept albums; The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979). The most remarkable of them are The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. Another unforgettable concept album was the rock opera Tommy composed by Pete Townshend and performed by The Who. It was also the first story-based concept album of rock. It is worth to highlight Quadrophenia.

Nowadays concept albums are less common but there are some interesting ones, for instance, Marina and the Diamonds’  Electra Heart album . It describes the story of Electra Heart, created by Marina as “a vehicle to portray part of the American dream.” Another concept album now is Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto. It tells the tale of Mylo and Xyloto and of falling in love and running away together.

Concept Albums include practically almost all the arts in one: music, literature and cinema. In case of carrying a concept album to the cinema, I think it is a mistake in some way, because it doesn’t let your imagination fly. However, many of the concept albums have been carried to the screen. We have to remember that not everybody perceives music the same way. A song that makes you cry or bring you back some memories, may bring nothing to another person .It´s incredible but true.
